Chemical rustproofing – Underbody only or Complete vehicle

First your car undergoes a rigorous and thorough steam cleaning on our hoists, to make sure the underbody and chassis rails on your vehicle are completely free of any sand, dirt and any road debris that may cause rust to form. We also clean under bash plates, after removing them and steam cleaning them separately. For the complete rustproof, this also includes your engine bay, both upper and lower sections.

Our technicians then inspect your vehicle to check for any existing rust. If surface rust is noted, it will be treated with a rust inhibitor, to make sure that the rust doesn’t spread any further than the surface, ensuring that your vehicle’s metal work remains rust free.

A product called Rust Conqueror is applied to your vehicle (we also sell this in retail quantities from our office – perfect for treating any surface rust you may have on trailers, boats and cars that don’t require a full rustproof). Rust Conqueror is a powerful rust penetrating, moisture repelling clear varnish-like coating. It penetrates the rust layers while impregnating the underlying metal surfaces, creating a 99% pore free isolating film. This product embeds rust in its substance and bonds the rust back to the surface. Further under-film corrosion will be stopped.

The next step is the application of our rustproofing treatment on the underbody. The product we use at Downey St is a proven, reliable, bitumen-based sealant that sets to a hard matte finish, to create a physical barrier between your car’s metal and the outside elements. This ensures your vehicle’s actual bodywork will remain protected from rusting for years to come!

Our complete rustproofing service will ensure peace of mind as we target all trouble spots within the vehicle. We treat inside all door panels, the underbody, engine bay, wheel wells and chassis rails.

If you have opted for complete rustproof protection, we then use Tectyl wax to treat other areas of your vehicle. Tectyl provides corrosion protection to door panels, side sills, cross members, inside chassis rails and frames, via a water-displacing, translucent wax coating. It’s non solvent properties ensure significantly more coverage – up to 50% more efficiency – and less smell when compared to organic solvent products.

Finally, for treatment of the engine bay we use a product called Kril. This is a heat resistant resin-based coating. It is designed and safe for use on engines & rubber/plastic surfaces. Kril is non-yellowing and is both oil and heat resistant. This ensures that your engine bay and its components are protected from the elements.

Things to note:

When spraying your vehicle, we do not drill access holes.

Inside door panels are sprayed to ensure coverage of the bottom seams. We don’t remove door trims (door cards) as our specialist equipment gets in the vent / weep holes.

As such, when you pick your vehicle up, do not be alarmed to see small patches of a brown waxy substance – Tectyl is applied as a liquid, but sets to a waxy consistency within 24-48 hours.

When picking up your vehicle, you will be given a small bottle of White Spirits with instructions on how to remove this residue, if you spot any.
